In a landmark step towards environmental sustainability, the Delhi Legislative Assembly has become the first legislature in India to run entirely on solar energy, marking a significant milestone in green governance.

The 500-kilowatt rooftop solar power plant was formally inaugurated by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who praised the initiative as a national benchmark for legislative and public institutions. He credited the success of the project to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that Delhi’s Assembly now stands as a shining example where sustainability, self-reliance, and digital empowerment converge.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, speaking at the inauguration ceremony, hailed the commissioning of the solar plant as a turning point in institutional accountability towards environmental protection. She highlighted that Delhi’s legislature must lead from the front as India advances toward sustainable governance, especially at a time when the country has already crossed the 50% mark in non-fossil fuel energy capacity.

Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta underlined that the transition to solar energy is not just an environmental achievement but a cornerstone in a broader shift towards digital and sustainable transformation.
“The successful commissioning of this solar plant is a new chapter in our commitment to cleaner energy and public responsibility,” he said. “We are proud to lead by example and demonstrate how legislative institutions can champion environmental stewardship.”

The Speaker also noted that the financial savings from solar power will be reinvested into developmental initiatives for the welfare of Delhi’s citizens. Additionally, he outlined the Assembly’s progress in digital transformation, including the digitisation of the Assembly library and continued improvements in IT infrastructure to enhance access to legislative resources and boost administrative efficiency.
